Saturday, I met Grant W in Waiouru and took over delivery of a Suzuki Swift going to a family in Shannon. Delayed 5 days with a dodgy clutch, Paul asked if we could get it done over the wknd, and told me the back story of their family plight.
Mum is away with their 9 yr old son in Starship, dad is at home looking after their 6 other children. After being in remission from Leukemia, the bastard cancer came back and Domanic is about to go through his 2nd round of treatment that no parents would want their children to endure.
On arrival, I was greeted by 4 adorable kids, and Phillip who was more grateful than any other recipient I’ve delivered to. They handed me a thank you card with everyone’s name listed, and a link to a make a wish site on FB.
When I called him the day before, he couldn’t have shown more gratitude, and he talked openly about what was ahead for Domanic and the whole family. We talked over 20 minutes, and I listened to a man who was obviously distressed, but staying strong for his family.
When I was leaving he asked if I wanted a lift to the bus stop. I told him I was ok, looking forward to the walk and would head to the cafe to wait for the bus. When I arrived I ordered coffee and a snack. The woman asked if I was Grant, when I told her yes she said… no charge. Phillip had phoned ahead to ask that the bill was his to pay. Those who have the least usually give the most.
In all my years with iDrive, this is the standout delivery for me. Who’d have thought delivering a Suzuki Swift would be so rewarding.
